Chapter 03
Sentimento
The chapter reveals itself as an ode to vulnerability and craftsmanship, straddling between structure and ease with poetic balance and graceful intent, inspired by Navas’ expansive visual vocabulary and sentimental research.
“Sentimento” explores tenderness, fragility, nostalgia, and invented memories through refined silhouettes building upon RETORI’s vocabulary of sophisticated fashion imbued with wandering nonchalance.
The signature draped outerwear is reimagined in featherlight iterations, including the iconic RETORI coat with a shawl collar infused with bodily eloquence. The women’s and men’s smartorial wardrobes explore effortless, functional tailoring with exclusive linen suits, while workwear inflections echo in the Saharan jackets and utilitarian vests bearing naturalistic and faunal embroideries inspired by the artist. The maison’s wraparound dress is cinched at the waist while knitwear conjures familiar simplicity and an artisanal feel.
Entirely designed and crafted in Italy - in a palette of sea-toned blues, turquoises, sun-aged browns, and soft sages that echo the artist’s expressive brushstrokes - Retori’s Chapter 03 collection is a wearable diary, woven with empathy, softness, and a deep emotional intelligence.
Manuela Navas
Manuela Navas, is the self-taught Brazilian artist who helped shape RETORI’s Chapter 03 collection, titled “Sentimento,” in conversation with the maison’s founder and creative director Salma Rachid and the design team.
The monographic exhibition, titled “Chupim” and curated by Samuele Visentin, presents a series of small-format paintings originally conceived to illustrate Brazilian writer Itamar Vieira Junior’s namesake book, the winner of Prêmio FNLIJ Ofelia Fontes as the best children’s book of 2025.
A window into the life of the Brazilian rural community, Manuela Navas’ paintings explore the rhythms of labor, kinship and nature as seen from the eyes of a child named Julim, with a visual narrative imbued with poetic and meaningful gestures that highlight the bonds shaping the Black and Brown community of her subjects. Two new works created specifically for the Salotto Retori exhibition expand the original series.
The opening event will feature a performance by Polish sound artist and composer Antonina Nowacka. Guests will be treated to cocktails and bites by Francesca Sarti’s Arabeschi di Latte.
